About the Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK)

Japan Broadcasting Corporation was established in 1950, a special corporation responsible for public broadcasting in Japan, and is operated under the Broadcasting Act. The abbreviation is "NHK". It is an external organization under the jurisdiction of the Broadcasting Policy Division of the Information Distribution Administration Bureau, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, and broadcasts both within and outside Japan.

The history and purpose of the establishment

The Japan Broadcasting Corporation was established on June 1, 1950 under the Broadcasting Act. The purpose of the establishment is to "to provide domestic core broadcasting through rich and good broadcasting programs so that they can be received all over Japan, for public welfare, while also carrying out the work necessary for the advancement and development of broadcasting and reception, and to carry out international broadcasting and the association's international satellite broadcasting."

In addition, under the Broadcasting Act, the company has inherited the operations of the Japan Broadcasting Corporation, an incorporated association established in 1926. The Japan Broadcasting Corporation was established by integrating the operations of Tokyo Broadcasting Station, Nagoya Broadcasting Station, and Osaka Broadcasting Station.

Broadcasting and program editing

The Japan Broadcasting Corporation is responsible for domestic broadcasts such as medium-wave broadcasts (AM radio), ultra-short-wave broadcasts (FM radio), and television broadcasts, and is also responsible for international broadcasts aimed at Japanese people overseas and foreigners. When editing broadcast programs, it is necessary to maintain political fairness, reporting does not bending facts, and to clarify the issues from multiple perspectives on conflicting issues.

Characteristics of public broadcasting

NHK has adopted an independent and profitable system, which is funded by receiving fees from viewers as a "public broadcasting." This is different from private broadcasting, which is primarily funded by advertising revenue, or national broadcasting, which is funded by national funds. Reception fees are not a fee for broadcasting services, but are positioned as a special contribution to support NHK's operations.

Additionally, NHK is prohibited from broadcasting advertisements, and public interest advertisements and program promotions are broadcast at will.

Reception fee system

Reception fees are collected to maintain and operate the broadcasting services provided by NHK. You will be required to enter into a contract with the installer of the television reception equipment, and the reception fee will be collected based on that contract. In addition, some grants may be provided by the Japanese government for international broadcasting.

Management and tax system

Under the Corporate Tax Act, NHK is exempt from corporate tax obligations as a public corporation, but under the Local Tax Act, some taxes may be levied. For example, real estate acquisition tax and property taxes are exempt or reduced.

business plan

NHK's business activities are carried out regularly based on a medium-term management plan. The formulation of a management plan involves the opinions of the executive department, the management committee, and viewers. Once the plan is approved, it will serve as Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications and will be deliberated in the House of Representatives and the House of Councillors, and will ultimately be passed.

Relationship with overseas media

NHK also has affiliates overseas and provides global media services. Outside of Japan, NHK Cosmo Media America and NHK Cosmo Media Europe have been established, and international broadcasting is being carried out.

Historical background

The abbreviation for "NHK" began in 1939 when the Japan Broadcasting Corporation (Incorporated Association) was used in the proposal for the Japan-Itachi Regular Cultural Exchange Broadcasting Agreement, and in 1946 it became officially used in broadcasting. In 1959, the abbreviation for NHK was officially decided in the Articles of Incorporation, and it continues to this day.
